President and CEO
Steven Cacchio has a broad-based banking career focusing on community banking in upstate New York. He also worked for six years as a Bank Examiner for the Comptroller of the Currency in the Syracuse office. Thereafter, he held increasingly responsible positions with Alliance Bank in the Syracuse area, ending as Senior Vice President in charge of all retail operations. When Alliance was acquired by NBT in 2013, Mr. Cacchio resigned to become the Chief Operating Officer of the $800 million Savings Bank of Danbury, Connecticut. He is a graduate of the University of Hartford and he obtained his MS in accounting from Syracuse University. Mr. Cacchio and his wife, Carol, have two teenage sons.
SVP/Chief Financial Officer
Charles Hughes started with Champlain National Bank as Comptroller in 1989 and was promoted to his current position in 1994. He obtained his BS in Accounting from the University of Maryland, an MFA in Production Management from the Yale School of Drama, and is a certified public accountant. Mr. Hughes grew up in Indianapolis. He has two daughters and enjoys self powered, gravity or wind assisted activities.
DaleAnn Bastian, SVP of Operations and Information Security Officer, has committed her career to community banking. She has a diversified banking background which includes expertise in information technology, information security, electronic banking services, deposit and loan operations, product development, project management, mortgage and retail lending, human resources and branch/retail management. Ms. Bastian is a graduate of the University of Vermont. She and her husband recently built a log home in North Hudson, NY where they enjoy the benefits of life in the Adirondacks.
Lisa Roberts began her employment with Champlain National Bank in August 1994 as AVP/Commercial Lender. Ms. Roberts was promoted to Vice President in 1996 and then to Senior Vice President and Senior Lender for the bank in 2007. Prior to joining Champlain National Bank, Ms. Roberts was employed by Evergreen Bank (now TD Banknorth) where she gained experience as a credit analyst and small business lender. Ms. Roberts holds a BS from SUNY Plattsburgh and is a founding member of the Champlain-Rouses Point Rotary Club and the Treasurer of the Champlain Children’s Learning Center.
VP/Tri-Lakes Regional Manager
Kevin Brady has more than 20 years of experience in finance, spanning both the asset management and brokerage industry with senior roles in portfolio management, trading and sales in both Boston and New York City. Brady attended Pennsylvania State University where he earned a BS in International Business and German. Brady enjoys living in the Adirondacks with his wife and three young children. He is an avid skier and is a board member for the New York State Ski Educational Foundation (NYSEF). In addition, he and his family enjoy boating, golf, and hiking.
VP/Human Resources Manager
Gayle Bridge joined Champlain National Bank in May 1979 as an Executive Administrative Assistant to Senior Management. Gayle’s banking history spans more than 35 years and includes extensive experience in the accounting department and payroll and benefits administration. In November 1996, she was promoted to her current position and is responsible for managing all of the Bank’s Human Resources functions. She resides with her husband, Rick, and enjoys golfing, traveling and NASCAR.
VP/Audit and Compliance
Valarie Favaro is Vice President of Audit and Compliance and has over 25 years of experience in the banking field with an emphasis on bank operations, regulatory compliance and internal audit. Valarie is responsible for overseeing all audit functions, as well as regulatory compliance. She is also responsible for the development and oversight of the bank’s Bank Secrecy Act program. Valarie works closely with all departments assisting members of staff, management and the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors in successfully discharging their responsibilities. Valarie is a Certified Community Bank Compliance Officer and is a Certified Community Bank Internal Auditor. Prior to joining Champlain National Bank in 2005, she was Assistant Vice President/Compliance Officer for a $350 million financial institution.
Edward Finnerty joined Champlain National Bank in January 2003 as Loan Production and Quality Control Manager. He was named a Vice President of the Bank in 2005 and added the position of Bank Counsel in 2012. Mr. Finnerty has overall responsibility for handling residential and commercial loan closings, as well as overseeing all other legal and contractual relationships for the Bank. Prior to joining Champlain National Bank, Mr. Finnerty maintained a private law practice for 20 years in Lake Placid where he resides. He came to the North Country in 1978 as Associate Legal Counsel for the Lake Placid Olympic Organizing Committee. Prior to assuming that position he was an associate attorney with the firm of Higgins, Roberts, Beyerl & Coan in Schenectady, NY. He earned his B.A. degree from St. John Fisher College and was awarded a J.D. from Albany Law School. Mr. Finnerty is active in a number of civic organizations in the Lake Placid community. He is currently Secretary of the Rotary Club of Lake Placid, Vice Chair of the Lake Placid Essex County Visitors Bureau, Treasurer of the Housing Assistance Program of Essex County and Treasurer of the Adirondack Architectural Heritage. Mr. Finnerty was also inducted in the Lake Placid Hall of Fame in 1998.
VP/Director of Marketing
Jacqueline Hallock joined the Bank in June 2008 as the Lake Placid Branch Manager, and became an Officer in 2009. In 2012 she was promoted to her current position where she handles all aspects of the Bank’s marketing, advertising and public relations. Before her banking career, Jacqueline spent two years as a Television News Producer at an NBC affiliate. Jacqueline holds a BA from St. Lawrence University and an MSc from the London School of Economics and Political Science. A North Country native, Jacqueline loves to travel and has lived in Trois Rivieres, Quebec; Anchorage, Alaska; and London, England.
VP/Electronic Funds Transfer Manager
Judy Hoskins joined Champlain National Bank in March 1994. Her responsibilities include the management of wire transfers and ACH processing, internet and mobile banking, as well as the Bank’s ATM and debit card programs. In July 2012, she achieved Shesunoff ACH Specialist certification. Judy earned her BA and MA in mathematics from SUNY Potsdam. She is a life-long Essex County resident, and the second generation of her family to be part of Champlain National Bank's management team.
Tim Kononan joined Champlain National Bank in 2007 as part of the commercial lending team. He is responsible for generating and managing commercial relationships in all of Champlain National Bank’s markets. Tim has an extensive banking background and has held management level positions at several banks in Vermont and New Hampshire. These positions include senior retail manager, regional commercial manager, and regional branch manager. Tim is committed to banking education and teaches courses on banking at the Community College of Vermont, the New England School of Banking, and the Northern New England School of Banking. Tim is also active in the community, serving on the board of trustees of the Clinton County Historical Association, the loan committee of Adirondack Economic Development Corporation, and is a member of the Plattsburgh Noon Rotary.
VP/Director of Branch Banking
Carol Manley’s banking career spans 36 years and began in 1978 with The Bank of Lake Placid. She joined Champlain National Bank in January 1988, and has held a variety of branch management and operations positions. Her responsibilities include branch operations and management, staff development, consumer and residential lending, small business lending, and the oversight of all nine branches of the Bank. Carol is a member of the Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce and the Elizabethtown Kiwanis Club.
VP/Information Technology Manager
Kevin Richard joined Champlain National Bank in June 2012 as the IT Administrator and assumed his current position in January 2015. Prior to joining the Bank, he was the Systems Manager for the Press Republican. Kevin also worked in the Information Technology field during his tour in the Air Force.
Douglas Young started his banking career in 1976 by serving the housing needs of residents living in Essex, Warren and Washington counties. In 1990, he joined Champlain National Bank as Branch Manager in Crown Point. In 1997 he was promoted to Vice President and Manager of the Willsboro Branch, which is also his home town. Currently he is responsible for the facilities of all branches along with physical security and purchasing. He credits his accomplishments to the education he received from Clinton Community College.
Assistant Vice Presidents
AVP/Mortgage Loan Underwriter
Denise Kaufman joined Champlain National Bank in December 2001 and has more than 25 years of consumer and residential mortgage lending experience. Denise leads the Loan Operations Department in providing processing, underwriting, preparation of documentation, and closing for both consumer and residential mortgage loans. Other key areas of responsibility at Champlain National Bank include the implementation and adherence of regulatory lending compliance requirements and bank policy, as well as serving as the product manager for the lending system utilized by both consumers and mortgage lending staff.
AVP/Loan Operations Manager
Jennifer Pecore started with the Bank in 2001 as a Temp in the Executive Department, before being hired full-time in the Commercial Loan Documentation Department. In 2007 she became a Commercial Credit Assistant, and in 2013 took on the roll of Commercial Loan Quality Control Specialist. In 2014, Pecore was promoted to Loan Operations and Servicing Supervisor, and in 2015 was promoted to her current position.
AVP/Deposit Operations Manager
Marilyn Strong joined Champlain National Bank in 1989 as a teller. In 1991 she became the CD and IRA Specialist and in 1996 she was promoted to the Deposit Operations Supervisor. In 2006 she was promoted to her current position where she continues to manage staff and the everyday interest of the Deposit Operations Department. Strong is a lifelong resident of Reber, NY and is active in the Reber Methodist Church. She has two beautiful children; Lucas who is employed at Adirondack Farms in Peru, and Tayler, who will be a senior at Plattsburgh State University majoring in criminal justice. Marilyn has a Chocolate Lab named Hershey and a rescue pup named Max. Marilyn spends her time “relaxing” on her farm that consists of six cows, Love, Jack, Cocoa, N, Bell, and Bow; four barn cats, Jungle Kitty, Smalls, and Benny; and 30 happy chickens!
Chairman of the Board
Peter S. Paine, Jr.
Mr. Paine has been Chairman of Champlain National Bank and its holding company, Champlain Bank Corporation for over 20 years, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. A graduate of Princeton University (where he was class valedictorian), Oxford University (where he studied law as a Rhodes Scholar) and Harvard Law School, Mr. Paine is a member of the New York and English Bars. A retired partner of the international law firm, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, he practiced law in New York, London and Paris. In keeping with his family's background in the pulp and paper industry, Mr. Paine served as a Director of Great Northern Nekoosa Corporation for many years.
Mr. Paine is a committed conservationist and has played a leading role in the modern efforts to protect the Adirondack Park. He was closely involved with pioneering legislation creating the Adirondack Park Agency and the New York Wild, Scenic and Recreational Rivers system and served on the Adirondack Park Agency for some 25 years. He chaired the Adirondack Nature Conservancy for four years and continues to serve as a Trustee. He is also a Trustee of the Center for Northern Woodlands Education. Mr. Paine is the immediate past Chair of the Board of Fort Ticonderoga, is also a Board Member of the Adirondack Foundation and President of the Boquet Foundation.
In appreciation of his efforts to endow scholarships for Americans at Oxford, his Oxford College, Christ Church, made him an Honorary Fellow and he was also named a “Distinguished Friend of Oxford” by the University. The Republic of France has appointed Mr. Paine a Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite as well as a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques in recognition of his legal and cultural contributions to French businesses and institutions. Mr. Paine and his wife, Patty, spend the bulk of their time at their home in Willsboro but still maintain a house in New York City. They have three children, two of whom, (Peter, III and Alex) serve on the Bank/Holding Company Boards, and seven grandchildren.
Roderic Giltz is the Chairman of Northern Insuring Agency, and is based in Plattsburgh. He received a B.S. from St. Lawrence University. Active in his community, Mr. Giltz serves on the Board of Directors for The Development Corporation, is active with the CVPH Medical Center Finance Committee, is a Trustee of the William H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute, and is the Chairman of the NCPR Executive Council.
Peter S. Paine III
Peter S. Paine III is a Vice Chairman of the Bank’s Board of Directors and sits on the Audit, Finance and Retail Committees. Mr. Paine is trained as a lawyer, but has spent most of his career as a management consultant to pharmaceutical and biotech companies. He is a graduate of Princeton University, Oxford University and Vanderbilt University School of Law. He splits his time between his home in Princeton, NJ and his family’s camp in Willsboro, NY. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Paine can be found, in what spare time he has, hiking in the High Peaks, boating on Lake Champlain or casting a line to tempt a bass or trout. He and his wife, Els, have three children.
Alice Cole joined Essex Asset Management in Vero Beach, FL in May 2009 and acts as a Managing Partner and Investment Officer. She is responsible for all aspects of trust administration and portfolio management. Prior to joining Essex Asset Management, Ms. Cole earned two Bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Political Science from Occidental College, where she graduated with Honors. She is a Certified Financial Planner™ and a Certified Investment Management Analyst™. Ms. Cole is the Chairman of the Board for the Berkshire School, and she sits on the Environmental Learning Center Foundation Board.
William Kissel owns and operates the law office of William H. Kissel in Lake Placid, New York, which he opened in 1982. From 1978 – 1982, Mr. Kissel was the General Counsel for the Lake Placid 1980 Olympic Winter Games. He received his J.D., Cum Laude, from Syracuse University. In addition to being on the Champlain National Bank Board of Directors since 1989, Mr. Kissel also serves on the Board of The Fort Ticonderoga Association. Mr. Kissel enjoys skiing, hiking and fishing, and lives in Lake Placid with his wife, Gail.
Raymond Martin is the founder and owner of Raymond J. Martin, CPA, PC in Tupper Lake. He was formerly a partner in the firm of Sweeney & Associates, CPA’s and Sweeney & Martin, CPA’s in Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake. He holds a BS from SUNY Brockport in Business Administration. Mr. Martin is a member of the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He and his wife, Lori, have been married 37 years and have three adult children.
Mr. McClelland is a long time resident of Keene Valley where his family built, and he currently manages, the outdoor retail shop The Mountaineer. He received a BS in Forestry from the University of Vermont. Mr. McClelland represents LandVest in the Adirondacks in their Timberland, Consulting and Real Estate Marketing divisions. He has served on various non-profit boards, is the past Co-Chair of the Adirondack Foundation, and is the current Co-Chair of the Governor’s New York Rising Community Reconstruction Program. He has three children with his wife Barbara, and enjoys coaching hockey and soccer.
Deena Giltz McCullough is the third generation president and CEO of Northern Insuring Agency, which is headquartered in Plattsburgh and has two branch offices in Massena and Whitehall. She is a cum laude graduate of St. Lawrence University. Ms. McCullough is on the Agents Advisory Council for Acadia Insurance Company, is the treasurer of Community Providers, Inc., which is the parent organization of CVPH Medical Center, and is on the University of Vermont Health Network and CPI Planning Committees. She is a Business Advisor to the School of Business and Economics at SUNY Plattsburgh, is on the Steering Committee of The Strand Theatre Restoration, and is a community board member of Plattsburgh State University, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Medical Center and an advisory board member of Mountain Lake PBS. Her personal passions include swimming, gardening, reading, paddle boarding, yoga, skiing, snowshoeing, photography and traveling.
Mr. Mundy is the President and CEO of Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH) in Plattsburgh, a position he has held since 2002. He also serves as President of Community Providers, Inc. and is on the Board of Fletcher Allen Partners. Mr. Mundy received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Roanoke College in Virginia and a Masters of Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia. His current passion is reviving the arts in the North Country by serving as co-chair of the Strand Theatre Revitalization Capital Campaign.
Alex Paine has been a director of Champlain National bank since 2003. He is CEO and Co-Founder of WebSight Design, Inc., a California-based internet business that provides web design, web development, hosting, and digital marketing services. Mr. Paine also serves as Chief Information Officer for Pacific Union International, which is Northern California’s leading residential real estate company. His philanthropic interests focus on education and the environment. He enjoys spending time with his wife and two young daughters.
Mr. Perley has a long career in the banking industry starting at Chemical Bank in 1961. He later served as President of Amoskeag National Bank in Manchester, NH. He joined Champlain National Bank in 1989 and served as its President until his retirement in 2006. His retirement was short-lived, as he returned to the Bank in 2015 to again serve as President and CEO. Mr. Perley is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth. He is active with the New York State Bankers Association and serves on its Retirement System Board of Trustees. He is also a former member of the American Bankers Association where he served on the Government Relations Council. He has been involved in many local community groups, including CVPH Hospital and the Chamber of Commerce in Plattsburgh
From 2002 through 2012 Teresa Sayward was the Representative for the 113th District in the New York Assembly. A life-long resident of the North Country, she lives in Willsboro with Kenneth, her husband of more than 50 years. They have four children and eight grandchildren. Mrs. Sayward is an avid gardener and enjoys golfing, kayaking and traveling.
